The Wages

Nothing is for man except what he strives for. (53:39)

In this world of truth where unchanging laws work rigidly, the law of wages is that everyone shall be paid according to the amount of effort he puts in. This law is one of the major themes of the Quran and is mentioned all through it. However, there is a law of repentance as well. If one repents i.e. leaves the evil path and turns towards God and follows His guidance, then would-be consequences of his past evil deeds may be neutralized by future good deeds. His past evil deeds may be wiped out as if they were never committed. There is no way to escape the consequences of evil deeds but through repentance i.e. returning to the right path.

Evil deeds are then eliminated en-mass, while good deeds survive. Man-made concepts of God’s fatherliness inspite of sins are not held by Quran.

Repentance by tongue, without change of heart, and lip-service to God’s chosen men cannot save anybody.

Wages related to Effort

Every soul earns only to its own account, and no laden soul bears the load of another. (6:165)

Has he not been told of what is in the scrolls of Moses, and of Abraham who fulfilled, that no laden soul bears the load of another, that nothing is for man except what he strived for, that his effort shall be soon seen and he shall be recompensed for it with the fullest recompense, and that to thy Lord is the Final End. (53:36-42)

Whoso brings a good deed shall have ten the like of it, and whoso brings an evil deed shall be recompensed only the like to it, and they shall not be wronged. (6:161)

It is not your wealth nor your children that bring you in nearness to Us, but those who believe and do righteous deeds, for them shall be the double recompense, for what they did, and they shall be secure in lofty chambers. (34:37)

They say, ‘none shall enter Paradise except that he be a Jew or a Christian.’ Such are their fancies. Say, ‘produce your proof if you are truthful’. No, whosoever submits his will to God and he is a good-doer shall have his wage with his Lord, and no fear shall be on them, nor shall they grieve. (2:111-112)

It is not your fancies, nor the fancies of the People of the Book, whosoever does evil shall be recompensed for it, and he will not find for him any friend or helper, apart from God; and whosoever does righteous deeds, be it male or female, and he is a believer, they shall enter Paradise and shall not be wronged a date-spot. (4:123-124)

Those who believe and do righteous deeds, and We do not waste the wage of those who do good work, theirs shall be Gardens of Eden, underneath which rivers flow; there they shall be adorned with bracelets of gold and shall be robed in green garments of silk and brocade and will recline therein upon couches; how excellent a reward, and how beautiful a resting place. (18:30-31)

Good for Good, Evil for Evil

Do those who commit evil deeds think that We shall make them like those who believe and do righteous deeds, their living and their dying equal; how evil do they judge! (45:21)

We have not created the heavens and earth and what between them is in vain; that is the thought of the unbelievers; so woe unto the unbelievers because of the Fire. Shall We make those who believe and do righteous deeds like those who cause disorder in the land, or shall We make the godfearing like the law-breakers? (38:27-28)

Those who believe and have not confounded belief with wrong-doing, they are guided. (6:82)

Moses said to his people, ‘seek God’s help and be patient; the earth belongs to God and he bequeaths it to whom out of His servants He will; and the end-result is for the godfearing. (7:128)

Those who belie Our Signs, We draw them on, step by step, whence they do not know; and I respite them; My device is deep. (7:182-183)

Fear the trial that shall not especially touch the wrong-doers among you, and know that God is terrible in retribution. (8:25)

Like Pharaoh’s folk and those before them – they disbelieved in God’s Signs, so God seized them for their sins; surely God is strong and terrible in retribution. That is because God would never change His favour that He conferred on a people until they change their condition; and God is Hearing Knowing. (8:52-53)

Rebels Eliminated

Have they not seen how many a generation We destroyed before them, whom We had established in the earth as We never established you, and had loosed heaven (blessing) on them in torrent, and had made rivers to flow beneath them; then We destroyed them for their sins and raised up after them a generation of others ----Say, ‘journey in the land and see how was the end of those who gave lies. ‘ (6:6-11)

How many a city We have destroyed and Our might came upon it at night or when they were resting at noon. Their cry, when Our might came upon them, was not but that they said, ‘we were indeed wrong-doers.’ (7:4-5)

Do they feel secure against God’s device ? But none feels secure against God’s device except the people of losers. (7:99)

Hast thou not seen that God has created the heavens and earth on truth? If He will, He shall take you away and bring a new creation, and that is not difficult for God. (14:19-20)

Repentance and Forgiveness

I am All Forgiver to one who repents, believes, acts right and follows guide. (20:82)

Say, ‘O My servants who have been extravagant against themselves, despair not of God’s mercy, God forgives sins altogether; He is the Forgiving, the Merciful. And turn to your Lord and submit to Him before the punishment comes upon you, for then you will not be helped. (39:53-54)

God accepts repentance of only those who do evil in ignorance then quickly repent. There is no repentance for those who commit evil deeds till death visits any of them and he says, ‘now I repent’, nor it is for those who die as unbelievers. (4:17-18)
