The Universe

He created everything, then determined for it a measure. (25:2)

The Universe, or what the Quran calls ‘the heavens and earth’, has not come into being by itself but has been created, out of nothingness, by the All-powerful and the Ever-existing Personality, God (Allah). The very fact of creation, and the supremacy of a perfect, immutable and predictable Law over the universe, and the beauty and rhythm manifest in the creation, nay, appearance of a being like man from a sperm-drop, is a proof positive of the presence of a Creator-God.

Again, the universe is not a purposeless, hotchpotch of a thing where anything, right or wrong, could happen. It is based on Truth i.e. on Law and for a Purpose. Nothing can exceed its set limits without running the risk of being perished. Here, only Truth wins, stays and flourishes. Falsehood vanishes as soon as it meets the Truth.

It is a controlled and a balanced world, where the hand of Almighty God can be vividly seen by an observing eye.

It is not a stationary world. It is progressive. It is guided by Law instinctively, every atom knowing its task, and it is set in motion to evolve in yet better forms, one after the other. In spite of its vast expanse, the whole of universe is a single entity, emerging from a Common Origin.

It has endless potentialities and limitless hidden treasures, though they are released as much as mankind deserves, duly measured and weighed.

Wages for the efforts of mankind are paid through such hidden treasures. It is a Rewarding universe.

It is a perfect universe. One cannot find a single fault in it.

And the Universe shall reach its End one day, and will be rearranged in a new setting, new horizons and new potentialities.

Man can see the Signs of aforesaid facts everywhere in the universe, provided he is unbiased and keeps his mind open.

That is the concept of the Universe given by the Quran, and it is reproduced below.

Universe created by God

God is He Who raised up the heavens without pillars as you can see them, then took the Throne, and subjected the sun and the moon; each one runs for a stated term; He manages the Affair and explains the signs so that you may be sure of meeting with your Lord. And it is He Who spread out the earth and made therein firm mountains and rivers; and of every fruit, He made in it two kinds; He covers the day with the night; in that are surely signs for a people who ponder. And in the earth are tracts neighbouring each other, and gardens of vines, and sown fields, and palms growing in clusters and otherwise, watered with the same one water; yet We excel one over the other in food; in that are surely signs for a people who understand. (13:2-4)

Say, ‘do you disbelieve in Him Who created the earth in two days, and do you make compeers to Him? – That is the Lord of the world. And He made there in firm mountains over it, and He blessed it, and He determined therein its sustenance in four days, equal for those who seek. Then He turned towards the heaven and it was smoke, and He said to it and to the earth, ‘come willingly or unwillingly’; they said, ‘we come willingly.’ Then He determined them as seven heavens in two days, and revealed to every heaven its Affair. And We adorned the nearer heaven with lamps and (made it) to guard --- that is the measure of the Mighty, the Knowing. (41:9-12)

It is God Who splits the grain and the date-stone, brings forth the living from the dead and brings forth the dead from the living --- that is God, then how are you perverted? He is the one who breaks the dawn, and He has made the night for rest, and the sun and moon for a reckoning – that is the measure of the Mighty, the Knowing. And it is He Who made for you stars, that by them you may find the way in the darkness of land and sea. We have explained the signs for a people who have knowledge. (6:95-97)

Based on Truth

We have not created the heavens and earth and what between them is while playing. We have not created them save on Truth, but most of them do not know. (44:38-39)

Falsehood Perishes, Profitable Stays

He sends down water from heaven, so the valleys flow in their measure, then the torrent carries swollen scum. And out of that, which they kindle in fire desiring ornament or ware, arises a scum similar to it; thus God describes the truth and falsehood. Then, as for the scum, it vanishes like froth, and as for that, which profits men, stays in the earth; thus God describes the similitudes. (13:17)

Balanced

The sun and the moon are to a reckoning, and the stars and trees prostrate. And the heaven, He raised it high and placed the Balance, that you may not transgress in the Balance. (55:5-8)

Of everything that We created two kinds, that you may pay heed. (51:49)

Controlled

And the sun moves on its appointed site; that is the ordaining of the Mighty, the Knowing. And the moon, We have ordained its stages till it comes back like an old palm-bough. It behoves not the sun to overtake the moon, nor can the night overstrip the day, and everyone swims in an orbit. (36:38-40)

And We made the heaven as a guarded roof, yet they trun away from its signs. (21:32)

For every term there is a Book (Law). God blots out and retains what He will; for with Him is the Mother-Book. (13:38-39)

One Entity

Have not the unbelievers seen that the heavens and earth were a mass joined together, then We rent them, and We created every living thing from water? Will they not then believe? (21:30)

Measured

There is not a thing but We have its treasures with Us; yet We send it down only in a known measure. (15:21)

God knows what every female bears and as the wombs shrink and as they add; everything with Him is measured. (13:8)

Instinctively Guided

He said, ‘who is your Lord, O Moses?’ He said, ‘our Lord is He Who gave everything its structure, then guided.’ (20:49-50)

Extol the Name of the Most High Lord, Who created, then shaped; who measured then guided; who brought forth the pasturage, then made it a black wrack. (87:1-5)

Perfect

He created seven heavens in regions; thou seest not any disparity in the creation of the all-Merciful; return thy gaze; seest thou any fissure? Return thy gaze once again; the gaze shall come back to thee, dazzled and weary. (67:3-4)

Rewarding

God created the heavens and earth with the Truth, and so that every soul is recompensed for what it earned, and they are not wronged. (45:22)

Destination

We have not created the heavens and earth and what between them is save on truth and for a stated term, but the unbelievers stay away from that they are warned of. (46:3)

When the Trumpet is blown with a single blast, and the earth and the mountains are taken up and crushed with a single and the mountains are taken up and crushed with a single blow, then, on that Day, the Event shall come to pass. And the heaven shall be split, for it shall be, on that day, frail, and the angels shall be on its borders. And eight, on that Day, shall carry over them the Throne of thy Lord. (69:13-17)

That day We shall roll up the heaven like the rolling of a scroll of writings; as We started the first creation, so shall We bring it back; it is a promise binding on Us; We are going to do it. (21:104)

Signs Visible

Surely in the heavens and earth are Signs for the Believers. And in your creation and what He has scattered of the animals are Signs for a people who believe. And in the alternation of night and day and what God has sent down from the heaven as provision, wherewith He revives the earth after it is dead, and turning about of winds are Signs for a people who understand. (45:3-5)
